The Society of American Travel Writers Foundation (SATW Foundation), a nonprofit founded in the early 1980s, strives to support, celebrate and sustain travel journalism by recognizing and rewarding efforts in this highly competitive field. The Foundation’s Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition, open to travel journalists from around the world, honors works in more than two dozen categories, including print, digital, audio, video and photography. Entries are judged by an accredited U.S. university, and winners are selected from among hundreds of submissions and announced at SATW’s convention.

SATW is the nation’s premier professional travel media organization comprising 1,000 of the travel industry’s most experienced journalists, photographers, editors, broadcast/video/film producers, bloggers, website owners, media relations experts and hospitality industry representatives from the United States, Canada and beyond. VKLarson is currently the external communications manager for SATW.

We have worked with and completed projects on behalf of a number of gardens and cultural organizations, including Greenwood Gardens, a non-profit 28-acre historic site and public garden in Short Hills, New Jersey; The Wassaic Project, a Hudon Valley based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, that uses art and arts education to foster positive social change; Innisfree Garden, a garden in the Hudson Valley with extraordinary midcentury design; and the Austrian Tourism Board and their colleagues from the Tirol celebrating 200 Years of the famous Christmas song Silent Night in New York City.

Side of Culture is our blog for promoting small (ish) arts and cultural organizations that not only add to the cultural landscape in the United States but also enrich the lives of those involved and help to build and maintain a web of support and talent in their communities.

These organizations often provide a platform for creating special and inspiring connections and outlets that can enrich and enhance our daily lives. They are also showcases of local talents that often fly below the radar of national recognition. Side of Culture would like to highlight the importance of these organizations to our communities.
